TV SERIES IN ENGLISH

TV SERIES: BEFORE YOU WATCH THESE 10 TV SERIES TO HELP YOU BECOME AN EXPERT ENGLISH SPEAKER YOU WANT TO FOLLOW SOME OF THESE TIPS AND GUIDES:

  1. DO A LITTLE RESEARCH - You definitely want to do a little research on a show you are interested in watching first. The reason for this is to just see if it is something you actually WANT to watch. You don't want to research it then get all the spoilers so just do some mild research and decide if this is something that can keep your attention.
  2. TAKE NOTES - You can take notes as you go along. This depends on what your focus is of course is you really just want to watch the show then you don't want to be pausing and stopping every second. You can take the notes as you watch then look up the new words or phrases after you have finished watching the show.
  3. NO SUBTITLES FIRST - Try to watch the series without subtitles first to see how much you understand. Subtitles sometimes can be distracting and take away from you actually working on improving your listening skills, so practice a little without subtitles, then try it with the subtitles afterwards and see how you did.
  4. WATCH IT AGAIN - Yessss, it is ok to watch the same episode more than once. You may have missed a few things, so yes watch it again if you have to and see how you progress. This is actually a measurable way to know how you are improving. Remember S.M.A.R.T. GOALS.
  5. CHOOSE A SHOW THAT MATCHES YOUR SKILL LEVEL - This one speaks for itself, if you are a beginner don't go watching Lord of the Rings (this is like a 12 hour movie lol) I am not even at that point haha. However you want to be realistic so watch something that goes well with your current English level.
  6. KEEP IT SHORT - Depending on your level of concentration and focus I strongly recommend watching those short series 30-45 minutes. This is because as you go through you may hear many new words or phrases and it can be overwhelming so pace yourself and practice.
  7. WATCH SOMETHING THAT INTERESTS YOU - You definitely want to stay motivated while you watch your TV Series so please decide on something that you will actually enjoy watching. If you KNOW you don't like comedy, then don't watch a comedy...)
  8. UNDERSTAND CONTEXT - This strategy can also be used to help you with your listening skills and understanding context more.
1. FRIENDS

I wish this show never ended lol. I had never watched it until the pandemic started...(weird right?) When I started though I binge watched it. Finished all 10 seasons in about a week. This is a great show as you will hear many American slangs used. You will hear regular language that may be used among friends and family. To top it off, it's also funny so it's a win-win situation.

This is a sitcom.

Seasons: 10

Time: 25 minutes

2. STRANGER THINGS

Stranger things is a great option as it includes children and when kids speak English it is very plain and straight forward as they are not as familiar with the slangs and more advanced expressions. This is therefore a good option for beginners.

This is a drama series.

Seasons: 4 (There will be 5 seasons)
Time: 40 minutes (Some seasons have longer episodes)

3. GLEE

One of my favorites to this day because it is a mixture of everyday high school life but also music. So this makes it a great option for you as you now not only get to practice through the amazing show itself but the infusion of the music in every episode makes it even better. You can focus on learning these songs and understanding what they are saying. Glee also covers so many possible emotions and language around that. It is a great option.

This is a musical comedy-drama.

Seasons: 6

Time: 40-50 minutes

4. MODERN FAMILY

Modern Family, another good one. The reason why this series is great is because it actually has someone in the show who struggles with English, so sometimes you will hear them correcting her or explaining certain things to her and of course because of this you will also grasp a lot from it. It is also another series that involves kids so again the English is not too advanced.

This is a sitcom.

Seasons: 11

Time: 25 minutes

5. GREY'S ANATOMY

Maybe my favorite season to date, at first I thought, how could you do 18 seasons and still keep my attention? How could so many characters come and go and you still manage to keep my attention. But yet still here I am, Grey's Anatomy has done it and continues to do it. I don't think I want this series to end, but I know it will at some point. This however is a medical series so you may here some medical terms, for me its great it continues to build my vocabulary too.

The good thing is that though it is a medical drama it has so much drama that it matches up perfectly with the medicine part.

Seasons: 18

6. SUITS

Suits is for you if you have a passion for the law and legal stuff. It is a great series to help you improve your vocabulary because of the language it uses. It is also great for Business English students as it covers so many different areas related to business and the law. It also has a bit of romance and other things going on in it at the same time and the concept is interesting as it is about a young man who is not a lawyer but got hired as one because he is super smart. This is a legal drama series.

Seasons: 9

Time: 40 minutes

7. THE BIG BANG THEORY

The Big Bang Theory is another good one. It has a lot of science around it though so the vocabulary can be a little advanced, so I wouldn't suggest this if you are a beginner. The jokes are also a bit advanced, but what makes this show a great TV Series for improving your English is the fact that you will here many idioms and phrasal verbs being used as you watch it. So this will definitely help you improve your English game.

This is an American sitcom.

Seasons: 12

Time: 23 minutes

8. HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER

This one if finished but they also recently started How I met your Father. Both are great sitcoms that can help you, between the narration and the humor it can be quite fulfilling. It really just helps a character to share the story with his children how he met their mother.

This is a sitcom.

Seasons: 9

Time: 22 minutes

9. ONE TREE HILL

One Tree Hill, is a little older than the rest but another great high school, coming of age, teenage years drama. I really enjoyed watching this show because you see the growth and change in maturity of the cast and it also looks at some real everyday issues that exist for teenagers, things such as bullying, relationships etc. I would recommend this for everyone and if you are a little romantic too it has that.

This is a drama series.

Seasons: 9

Time: 42 minutes

10. JANE THE VIRGIN

This is a great series, especially if you are a Spanish speaker learning English because some of the characters in the show even speak Spanish. SO it is a great mix that helps you to grasp the English used in it even better because there may be context. It is really about a girl that was artificially inseminated by accident. (This means she became pregnant by accident) and of course she was a virgin, hence the name of the show 'Jane the Virgin'. It really is an interesting concept and a must watch.
